Kovalam Beach, on the Arabian Sea coast just south of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, India, is one of the state's best-known seaside destinations. Its name means "grove of coconut trees," and the shoreline is lined with swaying palms that frame the view. The beach is made up of three adjoining crescents: Lighthouse Beach, the longest and busiest, Hawah Beach, and Samudra Beach, which is quieter and favoured by those seeking calm.

Rocky headlands cradle the coves, producing gentle, relatively safe waters that make swimming and sunbathing popular. The red-and-white Vizhinjam Lighthouse crowns a hill at the southern end, and climbing it rewards visitors with sweeping views of the coastline and endless blue horizon. Along the shore, small cafés serve fresh seafood, and fishermen pull in their catch in the early morning, a scene that adds local character.

Kovalam began drawing travelers in the 1930s, when the royal family of Travancore built a seaside retreat here, and it later became a stop on the hippie trail in the 1970s. Today it offers a mix of resorts, yoga and Ayurvedic massage centers, surfing lessons, and catamaran rides. The best time to visit is between October and March, when the weather is dry and pleasant, and sunsets over the water are especially memorable.
