Ephesians 6:10-17 is Paul's famous "armor of God" passage.
Paul urges believers to draw strength from God, because the real fight isn't against people but against spiritual forces of evil. He tells them to put on the full armor of God so they can stand firm against these attacks.
Belt of truth should be worn at the waist, holding everything together.
Breastplate of righteousness for protecting the heart.
Shoes of the gospel of peace for readiness and firm footing.
Shield of faith to block "flaming arrows" which may be temptations, doubts and attacks.
Helmet of salvation protecting the mind.
Sword of the Spirit described as the word of God.
Pray at all times, in the Spirit, staying alert.
The battle is spiritual, not human.
Paul frames the struggle as being against "rulers," "authorities," and "spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" — not against other people. This reframes conflict and hardship as something deeper than interpersonal disputes.
Armor is defensive, sword is offensive. Most pieces (belt, breastplate, shoes, shield, helmet) protect the wearer. Only the sword is a weapon — and it's tied specifically to Scripture.
Stand firm and protect yourself, but also engage.
Each piece maps to a virtue. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God aren't just abstract ideas — they're framed as practical tools for resisting deception, fear, and doubt.
Roman soldier imagery. Paul was likely under house arrest guarded by Roman soldiers when he wrote this (in Ephesians), so the armor imagery would have been vivid and immediate to his original readers.
"Stand firm" is the refrain. The passage repeats variations of standing firm/withstanding several times — it's about endurance and readiness, not necessarily offense-driven conquest.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
