Joshua 1:5-7 contains God’s encouragement and instruction to Joshua as he prepared to lead the Israelites after Moses’ death. It is a powerful passage about God’s presence, courage, obedience, and faithfulness.
1. “I will be with thee” - God’s presence.
God tells Joshua that just as He had been with Moses, He would also be with Joshua. Joshua was facing a huge responsibility, but he would not have to face it alone.
When God gives us a responsibility or leads us into an uncertain situation, His presence is greater than the difficulties before us.
2. “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee” God’s faithfulness.
God assures Joshua that He would neither abandon him nor fail him. This did not mean Joshua would have an easy life. He would still face battles and difficulties, but God would remain faithful.
Difficult circumstances do not mean that God has left us.
3. “Be strong and of a good courage” Courage in faith.
Joshua was told repeatedly to be strong and courageous. Courage here does not mean having no fear. It means moving forward faithfully despite fear or uncertainty because one trusts God.
Faith gives us courage to face responsibilities and challenges.
4. “Observe to do according to all the law” - Obedience.
God connected Joshua's success with careful obedience to His instructions. Joshua was not simply told to be brave; he was told to remain faithful to God's Word.
Biblical courage is not merely confidence in ourselves-it is confidence in God while remaining obedient to Him.
5. “Turn not from it to the right hand or to the left” - Stay faithful.
Joshua was instructed not to depart from God's law. This emphasizes consistency. Even when circumstances became difficult, Joshua was to remain faithful rather than choosing an easier path.
Joshua 1:5–7 teaches that God’s presence gives courage, God’s faithfulness gives confidence, and obedience to His Word gives direction.
A simple way to remember the passage is:
God’s presence - Courage - Obedience - Faithful living.
This passage can also be connected with Deuteronomy 31:6–8, where Moses encouraged Joshua with the same assurance that God would go before him and would not forsake him.
