The message from John 2:1-11 - Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana:
Jesus, his mother, and his disciples are at a wedding in Cana when the wine runs out. Mary tells Jesus, he initially says his "hour has not yet come," but she instructs the servants to do whatever he says anyway.
There were six stone jars (used for Jewish purification rites). Jesus said to fill it with water, which became wine - and not just any wine, but wine so good the host is amazed it wasn't served first.
The revealed glory.
John calls this the first of Jesus's "signs," and says it revealed his glory, leading the disciples to believe in him. In John's gospel, miracles aren't just displays of power - they point to who Jesus is.
Abundance and generosity.
The jars held roughly 20 - 30 gallons each - that's a staggering amount of wine, far more than needed. It's read as a picture of overflowing grace, not a bare - minimum miracle.
Old made new.
Using the purification jars specifically is often seen as symbolic - Jesus filling the vessels of old religious practice with something new, echoing themes of new wine/new covenant found elsewhere in the Gospels.
Mary's role and quiet trust.
Her simple instruction to the servants; "do whatever he tells you" ; is often highlighted as a model of faith, and it's her last recorded words in John's gospel.
Jesus and ordinary joy.
He performs this first sign not to heal or cast out a demon, but to save a wedding celebration from embarrassment - read by many as affirming everyday life, hospitality, and joy as worthy of his attention.
Do whatever Jesus tells you. You will also see the glory!
